Creative writing student wins major poetry prize

Phillip B. Williams, a student in WUSTL’s Master of Fine Arts creative writing program in Arts & Sciences, is one of five young poets awarded a $15,000 scholarship from the Poetry Foundation and Poetry magazine.

School of Law dean search committee announced

Holden Thorp, PhD, WUSTL provost and executive vice chancellor for academic affairs, has appointed an eight-member committee to identify candidates for dean of the School of Law. Daniel Keating, JD (right), the Tyrrell Williams Professor of Law, will serve as interim dean.

My Name is Strong exhibit opens today

My Name Is Strong, a Clinton Global Initiative University project, hosts an art exhibit today, Sept. 20, at Union Avenue Church. Some 60 works, including this piece (right) by Brown School student Kyle Brandt-Lubart, explore the issue of gender-based violence and celebrate the strength of survivors.

Entrepreneurship ingrained in students early

New WUSTL students interested in entrepreneurship had the chance to get their feet wet even before classes began. The IDEA program, from the Skandalaris Center for Entrepreneurial Studies, introduces students to WUSTL’s entrepreneurial ecosystem, allowing them to connect with each other and with upperclassmen during a weeklong orientation program.

Wedner named Korenblat Professor

H. James Wedner, MD (left), has been installed as the Dr. Phillip and Arleen Korenblat Professor at the School of Medicine, where he serves as chief of the Division of Allergy and Clinical Immunology. The named professorship, a gift from Jess and Alice Yawitz, honors their longtime friend and physician, Phillip E. Korenblat (right), and his wife, Arleen.

The Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum launches its 2013-14 exhibition season with Rashid Johnson: Message to Our Folks and American Places: Painting the Landscape in the Nineteenth Century, both opening today.

About 30 WUSTL graduates joined Teach for America this year, serving high-need students. Teach for America reports that WUSTL consistently ranks high among mid-sized colleges and universities that contribute teachers. This year, WUSTL is No. 12.
